Another Gay Murder in the city
NEW DELHI: A day after a 50-year-old senior manager of a noted apparel retail chain was found murdered inside a Lajpat Nagar store, cops said one of his male friends could be behind the murderous plot. They are questioning this suspect and have detained a few others as well.
According to the police, it is not yet clear why the victim, Narender Jaipalani, was inside the shop when the market was closed on Monday. The murder was discovered when a security guard at Lajpat Nagar-II checked up on the shop at I-39 after finding its shutter partly open.
Said the guard, Purab Bahadur, "As the market was closed on Monday, I got suspicious when I saw the shutter at I-39 partly open. I peeped inside and sensed that something was amiss. There was blood on the floor. I immediately informed some of residents and shop owners of the area."
The neighbours called up the shop owner, Rajeev Manglani, who stays in north Delhi. The victim had been associated with Manglani's clothing retail chain, Meena Bazaar, for several years. Manglani informed the victim's family at Lajpat Nagar Part-I. And by the time the cops arrived - after getting a call around 9.15 pm - Jaipalani had been moved to Moolchand hospital by his sons and neighbours.
Cops said there were as many as 11 stab wounds on the victim's body, pointing to the ferocity of the attack. "The entry seemed to be friendly. But there were 11 stab wounds all over his body. It seemed a sharp-edged weapon was used in the attack. Some cash was missing. However, the goods lying at the shop were left untouched," said a police officer. The cops are also looking for the victim's mobile, which has gone missing. Cops suspect that the mobile contains some objectionable video clips.
Some bottles of liquor, cream and condoms have been recovered from the spot, said police sources. However, Jaipalani's family members claimed that he had "never touched alcohol in his life".
The Lajpat Nagar police has registered a case of murder based on the statement of the victim's elder son, Nitin Jaipalani, who works as junior engineer of a private company in Janpath.
Nitin has told the police that his father had gone to Chandni Chowk in the afternoon. "I reached home around 6.30 pm from office and came to know that my father had gone to Chandni Chowk around 12.30 pm for shopping. When I tried calling on his mobile (9313575057), I found it switched off. Around 9 pm, I received a call from Rajeev Manglani, who told me that my father was lying unconscious at the shop," reads his statement.
He goes on to say that he and his younger brother, Deepanshu, rushed to the shop and found it partly open. "Lights were off inside the shop and the shutter was partly open. I called Raj Kumar and Surender, who work in the neighbourhood, and entered the shop with them. My father's body was lying near the kitchen slab inside the shop. He was lying in a pool of blood. While he was wearing his socks, the shoes and trousers were missing. We rushed him to Moolchand hospital where doctors declared him brought dead," said Nitin.
The police said some employees of the shop are being questioned and the victim's mobile phone records are also being scanned. "Jaipalani had gone to buy some goods from Chandni Chowk in the afternoon. He used to keep the keys of this Lajpat Nagar shop and reportedly came here directly after shopping," said the police.
When contacted, a representative of Meena Bazaar said, "There was no official reason for Jaipalani to be inside the shop. Presently, we are in a state of shock and do not want to make any comments. He was associated with us for several years." Delhi Police PRO Rajan Bhagat said: "We are investigating the matter from all possible angles. We have got a few vital leads." Jaipalani is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter, who got married four months ago. His younger son is studying at Delhi University.
